| Not going to Java One |
[May. 6th, 2007|01:16 pm] |
It looks like I won't be able to make it to Java One next week. Not sure when I'll next be able to make it north, in that case.
Gonna throw a party down here next weekend for Sevina's birthday though. |

| Programming, Math, Life |
[Feb. 2nd, 2007|05:11 am] |
I came back, got a degree doing graphics, and lots of CS theory stuff, at Santa Cruz.
My GPA ended up like 3.5 since my freshmen year we didn't get grades my freshmen year.
I'm a [[Math Guy]]. I took every undergraduate cs theory course offered Santa Cruz. I didn't take the Engineering math track, I fought my way through the Math majors math track, (and didn't see too many Engineers in those classes).
I didn't take any electives that didn't fulfill lots of general education requirements, I treated going to college as one of the most important, but rewarding things I'd ever do. I realized I will forever think of myself as an Academic, and an Engineer.
(I paid a significant portion of my way through school cutting up rail cars with a [[propylene]] torch for scrap metal, making Microsoft spreadsheets speak with Microsoft databases, and selling cell phones on commission).
I wouldn't have been allowed to double major in math, because there is too much overlap with a BA in CS emphasizing theory which is what I got, or a Bachelors in Computational Mathematics, (which I completed 95% of the coursework of).
For practicum, I studied graphics programming, visualization, animation, geometry coding, basically game programming :) (That has helped a lot).
I learned something about Mathematics.
There is no single concept I'm aware essential to a strong background in Mathematics. Eventually you learn lots of different computational methods are unique. Godel convinces you no single base mathematical system will ever be sufficient. You start seeing the world through a set theory, or string theory perspective instead of a geometric or Newtonian perspective. |

| Darkon - Everybody wants to be a hero - Trailer |
[Feb. 1st, 2007|07:20 am] |
 |
| | | "Darkon - Everybody wants to be a hero - Trailer" on Google Video | |
DARKON is a feature documentary that follows the real-life adventures of an unusual group of weekend ââ¬Åwarrior knights,ââ¬Â fantasy role-playing gamers whose live action ââ¬Åbattlegroundââ¬Â is modern-day Baltimore, Maryland, re-imagined as a make-believe medieval world named Darkon. These live action gamers combine the physical drama of historical re-enactments with character-driven storylines inspired in part by such perennial favorite fantasy epics like the legends of King Arthur, Lord of the Rings, and the saga of Conan the Barbarian. As role players, they create alter-egos with rich emotional, psychological, and social lives. They costume themselves and physically act out their charactersââ¬â¢ exploits both in intimate court intrigue and campouts and in panoramic battle scenarios involving competitive strategies, convincingly real props, and full contact ââ¬Åcombat.ââ¬Â Because real life so often gets in the way, itââ¬â¢s easy to understand these playersââ¬â¢ motivations. Everybody wants to be a hero. |

| The Ram has touched the wall |
[Jan. 12th, 2007|08:48 am] |
The title of the episode is a phrase used by Mark Antony advocating "no mercy" toward Pompey and the Optimates. The phrase is English translation of the Latin "Murum aries attigit" (see De Bello Gallico, Book II, Chapter XXXII). It refers to the policy of not allowing any mercy or surrender to the occupants of a fortification once the battering ram begins the assault on the gates. This policy was to act as a deterrent against resistance to those about to be besieged. It was an incentive for anyone who wasn't absolutely sure that they could withstand the assault to surrender immediately, rather than face the possibility of total destruction.

Anyway I'm getting paid $100 to fence/fight with foam weapons/larp something like that. We'll all be filmed for God of War 2.
